KATLA - REGENERATION
On our journey to be part of the solution to reduce the impact of fashion on the environment, we discovered the amazing potential of regenerative ocean-based farming, along with a key component – Seaweed.
Now, Katla is dedicating its efforts to regeneration with the launch of its own direct seaweed cultivation in Iceland giving light to THE REGENERATION COLLECTION – Katla’s first items made from seaweed sourced from its own Sleepy Islands.
Launching this summer, THE REGENERATION COLLECTION offers items made of Icelandic seaweed and cotton blends by PYRATEX®. In line with Katla’s motto to offer timeless essentials, it features sweatsuits and t-shirts in both classic and fun colorways.
Sleepy Islands, Iceland
OUR CULTIVATION, OUR SEAWEED
As part of our own satellite operations on Sleepy Islands (“Svefneyjar) in Iceland and in partnership with Djupid Innovation Center and local entrepreneurs and experts, we are excited to advance research on regenerative ocean-based farming towards a climate solution, and to be among the first seaweed cultivation solutions in Iceland.
Seaweed regeneration is a key tool to solving the climate crisis. As seaweed grows at a rate 30 to 60 times faster than land-based plants, it consumes huge amounts of carbon and nitrogen from the ocean water, which is good for the climate, the ocean, and us.
The cluster of 63 islands located in Breiðafjörður are one of the main sources of sustainably harvested seaweed used in fabric for apparel today and is used throughout our Katla seaweed blend fabrics. And to develop best practices for seaweed cultivation, Katla has set up an experimental hatchery in Sleepy Islands.
BETTER FOR THE PLANET, BETTER FOR YOU
Not all-natural fabrics are better for the planet, but thanks to its health benefits together with its ability to absorb carbon, Katla’s Seaweed blends are reimagining the power of seaweed in a fiber.
Seaweed is made of unique properties such as vitamins, trace elements, amino acids and minerals that help to protect our skin against harmful environmental influences. When worn, it helps to activate cell regeneration, which in turn can relieve skin diseases, reduce inflammation and soothe itchiness. The seaweed also provides great softness and has anti-oxidative capacities that eliminate free radicals, while caring for your skin.
OUR TODAY & TOMORROW
Katla aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2023. To continue to support ocean regeneration, 10% of net proceeds from the sale of THE REGENERATION COLLECTION will be invested in or donated to ocean protection and seaweed cultivation efforts.
