At KATLA, Zero Waste is more than a philosophy, it’s our practice. Zero Waste is at the core of our brand, and we’re proud of the actions we’ve taken to minimize waste in every aspect of our supply chain.
What steps have we taken so far?
Every Katla item is made either on-demand or in small batch manufacturing. In an industry that overproduces on average 30-40% each season and where 3 in 5 garments end up in landfill or incinerators, this needs to become the norm. Overproduction has never been tenable and the devastating impacts on people, animals and our environment are visible now more than ever before. Zero Waste manufacturing of seasonless styles is the way forward, and we’re proud to pioneer the Zero Waste Movement.

In addition to Zero Waste Manufacturing, we are committed to rolling out Zero Waste Practices across our supply chain, including Zero Waste Design. Conventional fashion design can lead to vast amounts of raw fabric material waste. Zero Waste Design means designers thoughtfully architect and create patterns that lend themselves to no fabric being wasted.

We’re thrilled to partner with Shelly Xu Design (SXD) to launch the first Zero Waste Hoodie, which marries Katla’s Zero Waste Manufacturing approach with SXD’s Zero Waste Design practice to create a hoodie that is truly Zero Waste, Zero Compromise.

ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
Hundreds of millions of hoodies are produced in our industry. We know that the fashion industry needs some big changes when it comes to sustainability, so we decided to reimagine one of the most popular staples in our closets to be as sustainable as possible. By marrying Katla's zero-waste manufacturing and SXD's zero-waste design, we created a hoodie that is truly zero waste, zero compromise.
Through the design process, the hoodie saves 25% of the raw fabric material while featuring a spacious, clean silhouette. The design is made to be versatile across sizes and is gender fluid. To share this innovation with as many people as possible, we decided to make the design open source. You can download the pattern below or scan the QR code on the back of your hoodie to find detailed instructions about how to create your own zero-waste version. Just imagine if all hoodies could be made this way!
As part of our commitment to transparency, each hoodie includes a unique tracking number on an inside label. Enter the tracking number on our website to learn about the origins and history of your item. Explore our resale/recycling program for end of use.

SXD (also know as Shelly Xu Design: shellyxu.design) is about maximizing beauty using minimalism. We create artful, versatile and functional clothing that not only produces no waste but also reduces the waste left by the apparel industry. Recently, SXD became the first design startup to win numerous prizes, including the Grand Prize at Harvard's New Venture Competition.
